The stove hasn't been working well in the house and Brett discovered we were out of propane. He had to call to get a new tank delivered this morning before we went off to work with the dog rescue. At home we don't have this problem so it was new to me.
Today we met with the director of ARF, Meriam. She told us about the dog that was left in a dumpster, another female dog with 5 day old puppies that were left on the side of the highway, and how one dog was shot repeatedly with a BB gun. It was sad to hear their stories. Meriam spends a lot of her time doing the rescue and going into the communities educating people regarding neutering and vaccinating their dogs and cats. She finds homes for those that she can and many times people who live in the US are adopting them.
We followed her, by car, to a remote area were they have a kennel. She told us they couldn't publicize the whereabouts of the kennel or there would be hundreds of animals dropped of and they couldn't handle all of them at one time. They just sent a couple dogs off to the states for adoption and need to get three dogs ready to leave. The dogs needed baths and socialization and I was happy to help. Then we cleaned the kennels.

We ate dinner in a neighborhood restaurant where I tried Mofongo at the recommendation of my Spanish teacher, Mrs. Montecello. It is a tasty concoction of mashed plantain, seasonings and a choice of filling; vegetarian, shrimp, steak, pork, seafood ... whatever you prefer. I had chicken. Also, I had empanadas which is a stuffed bread with chicken and fried along with rice and beans. I hope you are reading this blog Mrs. Montecello because I was thinking of you when I placed my order with good Spanish pronunciation may I add. Thank you for all your help and telling me about these delicious foods.
In the evening we went to the town square in Rincon were the local artist displayed their artwork. I bought two necklaces made with beach glass and sea shells and got a henna design on my hand.

Zack, the 16 yr old on our trip played chess against one of the guys from Rincon. Zack is in his school's chess club and the local guy has won many tournaments in Puerto Rico. It was a tough match, but Zack captured his King.
