Surfrider Foundation, Rincon
In 1968, Rincon hosted the World Surfing Championship
Today, is International Surf Day and we met the Surfrider Foundation people at Domes Beach for another day of beach cleanup. We found more plastic and garbage here than the prior cleanup.
After walking miles in the morning and afternoon and picking up plastic and garbage on the beach, some of us took time to check our social media and eat pizza with chorizo sausage and bacon. All of us kept some of the beach glass we found as a souvenir. Below is a sample of what people do with the beach glass around here. This is a beautiful beach glass necklace with earrings that I bought for my mom at the artisan market.
Domes Beach is named after the big concrete dome seen when walking onto the beach. The dome entombs a failed Nuclear Reactor which was built by the US Military in 1960. It is listed in the US National Registry of Historic Places as a decommissioned Boiling Nuclear Superheated (BONUS) Reactor Facility. BONUS was a prototype to assess the feasibility of the superheating concept for energy production. The reactor had its first nuclear chain reaction in 1964 and achieved full power operation in 1965. BONUS was shut down in 1968 due to technical difficulties.
